Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy refers to a type of medical treatment that uses shockwaves to promote healing while addressing a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. According to Dr. Lynn Owens of Owens Chiropractic in San Diego, shockwave therapy uses high-energy acoustic waves directed toward the affected area or targeted tissue to treat a number of common chronic soft tissue conditions, like tendonitis and more.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy, which also may be known as ESWT (extracorporeal shock wave therapy), is commonly used to address the underlying medical causes and symptoms of musculoskeletal conditions.

A specialized device delivers shockwaves to the treatment site during a shockwave therapy session. While some experience mild discomfort, most tolerate shockwave therapy well. Potential side effects are usually mild but may include temporary soreness or bruising in the target area.

The specific internal mechanisms of shockwave therapy, which are only beginning to be understood, are believed to include an enriched blood flow to the treatment site, scar tissue breakdown, and the stimulation of cellular activity required for recovery.

What Conditions Can Shockwave Therapy Treat?

Shockwave therapy, which stimulates the body's natural capacity to heal, is a conservative and non-invasive treatment option. It is often used when other conventional treatments have not provided enough symptomatic relief.  These conditions include –

Plantar Fasciitis

The tough band of tissue (a.k.a. plantar fascia) that is located under the foot becomes inflamed and causes intense pain.

Achilles, Patellar, or Calcific Shoulder Tendinopathy

  • This Achilles tendon may become inflamed or be prone to microtear, which causes stiffness and pain in the heel area.
  • When the patellar becomes inflamed or the knee/patella deteriorates, it is known as Jumper's Knee.
  • When calcium deposits form on the tendons of the shoulder, it can cause pain and reduced range of motion.

Tennis or Golfer's Elbow

  • The pain associated with Tennis Elbow (an overuse injury of the outer elbow) can be helped with shockwave therapy.
  • The pain associated with Golfer's Elbow (an overuse injury of the inner elbow) can also be helped with shockwave therapy.

Hip Bursitis

Inflamed bursae, the fluid-filled sacs around the hip joints, characterize Bursitis.

The number of shockwave therapy sessions may vary depending on the clients and the condition being treated.
